Small Enterprises![]() A purposeful constructive comedy that portrays the suffering of a big family. The suffering is because of its meager means for living which obliges the elder brother to leave school to earn the living for his mother and 7 brothers and sisters till they grow, finish their studies and get married. Then he finds out that he is now in the fifth decade of his age, and that he has lost much, especially a miserable love story which kept suffering for 15 years then died away after several failures.
Assi, the main character of this work, loves Laila and promises to marry her. But when he starts calculating his circumstances, as usual, he realizes that he is unable to fulfill his promise and he cannot make a good husband to her. So, he tells her his going back on his word while her eyes are filled with sad tears. Assi suffers a lot, then he decides to find a way out of his poverty by making small enterprises through which he can collect some money for bigger enterprises. He starts by selling food and vegetables, then he becomes able to share in buying a house with some of his friends for trading. When he does his calculations again he finds out that he can get married to Laila. He tells her the good news, but unfortunately, his brother falls in a problem and his mother requests him to save his brother. So he goes back on his trade with his friends and withdraws his share and spends it on his brother and becomes bankrupt again as he has always been. He again breaks his promise with Laila. Then, after a series of his failures he decides to marry Laila in spite of everything, but alas! When he calls her again, he finds that she has already got married.
A change in his situation starts when he happens to prove his honesty with a millionaire who admires him and offers his only spinster daughter as a wife to him. Then this millionaire decides to retire and make him run his business for him. But Assi fails again because he responds to his mother's request to employ his in efficient relatives who become the cause for his new failure, then he ends up selling vegetables again. This work throws light on the falsity of different social relationships; the man-woman relationship; and many other important faces of our factual contemporary problems. A very interesting serious comedy indeed!
